Some say technology is like wine: it’s better aged. But the world’s global crises cannot wait for tomorrow’s solutions.
Social Hive is a collective of social entrepreneurs, futurists, designers, and developers driven to make an impact through the world’s greatest collective invention: the Internet.
Over 1.6 billion people (June 2009) are currently connecting online to share text, photos, audio, video, and other digital files. With no additional cost, friends on opposite sides of the globe can converse with each other in real time through video chat or have their words automatically transcribed and translated. The old barriers of distance and language are being rapidly pulled down.
In a recent example of the democratizing power of the Internet, Iranian students used Twitter, YouTube, and blogs to raise their voices in protest.
So what’s next?
As a global community, we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s currently possible with the Internet–let alone what the future holds. With Web 2.0 technologies coming out of beta and semantic tools starting to appear online, the question remains what people will do with the tools to change their offline realities.
To help answer this question, Social Hive is currently experimenting in the labs with several mashups that help push the envelope on existing technologies. In the near future, we will be releasing web apps and reports that connect users to simple and powerful online tools to aid them in organizing their local communities into action.
If the world is going to make it safely through globalization, a critical mass of us (the people) will need to wake up, act together, and consciously evolve our cultures. And all while trying to preserve diversity.
Tough challenges call for committed action.
